Kashmir, October 28,2025- In a major welfare-oriented decision, the Omar Abdullah-led Jammu and Kashmir Government has announced a relaxation in the education criteria for the Marriage Assistance Scheme aimed at supporting economically weaker sections. The move is expected to bring relief to thousands of poor girls who were earlier unable to qualify for the scheme due to strict academic requirements.
Under the revised guidelines, girls from Below Poverty Line (BPL) and low-income families will now be eligible for financial assistance at the time of marriage, even if they have not attained a specific level of formal education. The government stated that the decision was taken to ensure inclusive social welfare and to prevent deserving beneficiaries from being left out due to educational limitations.
Officials in the Social Welfare Department said that the amendment aligns with the administration’s commitment to women empowerment, poverty alleviation, and social justice. The scheme provides monetary aid to help poor families meet marriage expenses, promoting dignity and reducing financial burden on marginalized households.
Speaking on the development, government sources highlighted that the policy adjustment reflects the Chief Minister’s focus on grassroots welfare reforms and inclusive governance. The decision is part of broader efforts to enhance the reach of state-sponsored social assistance schemes across Jammu and Kashmir.
