Kashmir, August 1, 2025 – Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah visited Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad, honoring Mahatma Gandhi. Engaging with the charkha, a symbol of self-reliance and nonviolence, Abdullah emphasized the enduring Gandhian ideals of unity and peace.
In a post on X, Abdullah wrote, “I feel humbled & privileged to have been shown around the Sabarmati Ashram of the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi. His teachings ring true even today.” He spun cotton on the charkha under guidance and placed a khadi garland on Gandhi’s statue, quoting, “True democracy… has to be worked from below by the people of every village.”
Founded by Gandhi in 1917, Sabarmati Ashram was central to India’s freedom struggle, including the Dandi Salt March. Abdullah’s charkha engagement highlights Gandhian principles’ influence on modern leaders.
In Gujarat for a Travel and Tourism Fair in Gandhinagar, Abdullah promoted J&K tourism, noting Gujarat’s significance as a tourist source.
