Srinagar, November 1,2025: Former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has welcomed the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) and the Government of Jammu and Kashmir for the Srinagar Water Metro Project, calling it a “progressive step” toward developing eco-friendly and modern transport infrastructure in the region.
In a statement issued on Friday, Omar Abdullah said that the Srinagar Water Metro will not only decongest city roads but also rejuvenate water-based transport in the Valley, providing residents and tourists with a clean, efficient, and scenic mode of travel.
“This is a welcome initiative that blends sustainability with innovation. If executed well, the Srinagar Water Metro can redefine how we move across the city while protecting the beauty of our lakes and rivers,” Omar Abdullah said.
He emphasised the importance of ensuring environmental safeguards, proper rehabilitation of affected communities, and transparency in implementation, so that the project delivers long-term benefits without compromising ecological balance.
The Srinagar Water Metro, developed under collaboration between IWAI and the J&K Government, aims to connect major locations around Dal Lake and the Jhelum River, integrating water transport with the city’s broader Smart City Mission and eco-tourism framework.
Omar Abdullah expressed hope that the project will generate local employment opportunities and attract tourists seeking sustainable travel experiences. “We must prioritise projects that bring both development and dignity to the people,” he added.
