Srinagar, May 11, 2025 – A semblance of normalcy returned to the Kashmir Valley overnight as no ceasefire violations were reported along the Line of Control after 11 p.m. on Saturday, officials confirmed. This marks the first night in six days without the sounds of aircraft, missiles, or drones overhead, bringing relief to residents amid heightened tensions between India and Pakistan.
The ceasefire agreement, effective from 5 p.m. on Saturday, was reached between the Directors General of Military Operations of India and Pakistan following days of intense cross-border exchanges, including drone strikes and artillery fire. The truce came after a U.S.-mediated effort, with President Donald Trump announcing the deal, though India emphasized that the agreement was directly negotiated between the two nations.
Despite initial violations by Pakistan on Saturday evening, including drone sightings and explosions in Srinagar, Udhampur, and other border areas, the situation stabilized overnight. “No drones, firing, or shelling were reported overnight,” officials stated, with visuals from Poonch, Kupwara, Uri, and Jammu city showing calm on Sunday morning.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri had earlier condemned Pakistan’s violations, stating that Indian armed forces were responding “adequately” to the breaches. However, the absence of overnight incidents suggests the ceasefire is holding for now.
The calm follows a turbulent period sparked by a terror attack in Pahalgam on April 22, which killed 26 people, mostly Hindu tourists. India’s “Operation Sindoor,” launched on May 7, targeted terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, escalating tensions. Pakistan’s subsequent drone incursions and shelling led to blackouts in several Indian cities, including Srinagar, Jammu, and parts of Punjab and Rajasthan.
Residents and officials remain cautious. “India categorically stated that in case of ceasefire violations, there would be an unprecedented response. Pakistan understood,” said Major General (Retd) PK Sehgal, reflecting on the overnight calm. The Indian government has maintained that its stance, including the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, remains unchanged despite the ceasefire.
World leaders have hailed the truce, with Trump expressing intentions to increase trade with both nations and work toward a long-term solution for the Kashmir dispute. However, analysts warn that the ceasefire does not address underlying issues fueling the decades-long conflict over Kashmir.
