New Jammu-Mendhar-Jammu route approved

The Union Ministry of Home Affairs has recently approved the Jammu-Mendhar-Jammu helicopter route, addressing a critical need for improved transportation in the Mendhar sector. Known for its rugged terrain and proximity to the Line of Control, this area has long required better access to essential services. The subsidized service is expected to facilitate medical evacuations, boost tourism, and connect residents to urban centers more efficiently. Additional routes are also in the pipeline as part of the scheme’s expansion.

Helipad Network Grows in Bandipora and Kupwara

Six new helipads in Bandipora and one in Kupwara have become operational, marking a significant step toward enhancing connectivity in northern Kashmir. These facilities are designed to support emergency services and passenger travel in regions where road access is limited. Over the next two years, authorities plan to construct more helipads, further strengthening the infrastructure backbone of the subsidized helicopter service.

Kishtwar Airstrip Development Under RCS-UDAN

In a major boost to air connectivity, the Kishtwar Airstrip is being developed under the Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS-UDAN) with a proposed allocation of ₹10 crore. This project aims to make air travel affordable and accessible in the hilly district of Kishtwar, aligning with the UDAN initiative’s goal of empowering the common citizen. Once completed, the airstrip will serve as a vital link for both locals and visitors, fostering economic growth in the region.

Bridging Gaps in Remote Areas

The expansion builds on existing subsidized helicopter routes, such as Jammu-Rajouri-Poonch-Jammu, Jammu-Doda-Kishtwar-Jammu, and Kishtwar-Sounder-Navapachi-Ishan-Kishtwar. Local officials have praised the initiative, noting its potential to bridge the gap between remote communities and essential services. By improving access to healthcare, education, and markets, the scheme is expected to drive social and economic development across Jammu and Kashmir.
