Namda Sazi Empowers J&K Girls: From Watching TV to Weaving Talent, Earning Respect & Independence In one year we learnt and also gave our work to the government. Then in the second year we got an advanced course. This is the third year in which we work and give Namda rugs to the department, said J&K girls working at Namda Sazi centre. In the first year we got Rs 1000. In the advanced course we got Rs 1500. Earlier we used to do nothing and just sit at home and watch TV or look at mobiles, the girls added. When we do our work, we get respect at home too. We are not dependent on others. Whenever we tell someone about ourselves, they become happy and say that this is your art, this is your talent. To make Namda rugs, first you have to put wool then sprinkle soap and tie it tightly with a rope as shown here in the video. This is how we make Namda Sazi. “Namda Sazi” and “Gaba Sazi” both refer to traditional Kashmir handicrafts involving the creation of felted rugs, often made from wool. “Namda Sazi” specifically refers to the creation of Namda rugs, which are non-woven floor coverings made by felting wool fibers together. Wool fibers are enmeshed with water, soap, and pressure to create a felted fabric, which is then often embroidered. It is a significant part of the traditional Kashmiri handicraft. Coming here to the centre made a huge difference. The heart also feels happy that we earn with our own hands and are not dependent on anyone. We should take advantage of the schemes given to us by the Government. Learn hand work, your heart will be happy and you will stay away from depression. By working hard a person stays fit and also gets respect, said a woman at the centre. There are 20 girls in this centre and all are very happy. We give this message to all girls out there that you should also go to your center and learn the work, you will be respected at home as well as outside. You can do this work along with studies, said the trainer at one centre in Jammu & Kashmir.
