Muharram 2026 observed with reverence in Srinagar

Srinagar, June 26,2026-The Shia Muslim community in Srinagar observed Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar, with deep reverence and solemnity, marking the beginning of the Islamic New Year. The occasion witnessed religious gatherings, prayers, and mourning rituals as devotees paid tribute to the supreme sacrifice of Hazrat Imam Hussain, the beloved grandson of Prophet Muhammad.

Muharram holds profound religious significance for Muslims, particularly the Shia community, as it commemorates the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain and his companions in the historic Battle of Karbala in 680 CE. Imam Hussain’s sacrifice is remembered as a timeless symbol of courage, justice, truth, and resistance against oppression.

Across Srinagar, mourners gathered at Imambaras and religious centres to participate in Majlis (religious sermons), recitations of elegies, and special prayers reflecting on the values of sacrifice, compassion, and unwavering faith exemplified by Imam Hussain. Many devotees also took part in traditional mourning processions, expressing grief and solidarity with the message of Karbala.

Religious scholars highlighted that Muharram is not merely a period of mourning but also an opportunity to reflect on the universal ideals of justice, humanity, patience, and standing against tyranny. They urged people to draw inspiration from Imam Hussain’s life and apply those principles in their daily lives.

The observance of Muharram in Srinagar passed in a peaceful and spiritually charged atmosphere, with devotees offering prayers for peace, harmony, and prosperity. The solemn ceremonies will continue until the 10th day of Muharram, known as Ashura, when the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain is commemorated with the largest gatherings and mourning processions.
