Srinagar, August 22, 2023 – The Meteorological Department (MET) has issued an advisory for Jammu and Kashmir (J&K), warning of moderate to heavy rainfall in several parts of the region from August 23 to 26. The forecast comes amid concerns over potential flooding, landslides, and disruptions to daily life in the vulnerable Himalayan terrain.
According to the latest bulletin from the MET department, a cyclonic circulation over the upper parts of J&K and adjoining areas is likely to trigger widespread rain activities. Light to moderate rain with thunder and lightning is expected across the Union Territory, with isolated heavy downpours predicted in districts such as Srinagar, Anantnag, Kupwara, and Jammu. The advisory highlights the risk of flash floods in low-lying areas and urges residents to remain vigilant.
“This weather system could lead to increased water levels in rivers , particularly in the Kashmir Valley and parts of Jammu division,” said a MET official. “Travellers and farmers are advised to exercise caution, and authorities have been alerted to monitor vulnerable spots.”
The department has recommended avoiding unnecessary travel, especially in hilly areas prone to landslides. Educational institutions and outdoor activities may face disruptions, and emergency services have been placed on high alert. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has classified the alert as ‘yellow’, indicating the need for preparedness but not immediate evacuation.
This rainfall event follows a relatively dry spell in the region, which has been grappling with water scarcity issues. However, excessive rains could exacerbate soil erosion and damage to infrastructure, including roads and bridges, as seen in previous monsoon seasons.
Residents are encouraged to stay updated via official MET channels and follow safety guidelines from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF). The forecast for post-rain periods suggests partial improvement, with dry weather returning by August 27.

- Agricultural Concerns: Potential damage to standing crops; farmers advised to secure livestock.
