Srinagar, April 18, 2025 – The Meteorological Centre Srinagar has issued a weather advisory warning of heavy rain, snowfall, and thunderstorms across Jammu and Kashmir from April 18 to 20, 2025, with peak activity expected from the night of April 18 to late night on April 19. The advisory, directed to Divisional Commissioners of both Jammu and Kashmir divisions, attributes the severe weather to an active western disturbance affecting the region.
Widespread light to moderate rain and snow are anticipated, particularly in the Pirpanjal Range of Jammu Division and middle to higher reaches of Kashmir Division, including Anantnag-Pahalgam, Kulgam, Sinthan Pass, Shopian, Pir Ki Gali, Sonamarg-Zojila, Bandipora-Razdan Pass, Gulmarg, and Kupwara-Sadhna Pass. The forecast includes heavy rain and snow in these areas, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, hailstorms, and strong winds of 40-50 kmph, gusting up to 60-70 kmph.
The adverse weather is likely to disrupt surface transport, including the Jammu-Srinagar and Srinagar-Leh National Highways, and other major roads in middle and higher reaches. There is also a risk of landslides, mudslides, and shooting stones in vulnerable areas. The MeT Centre has advised farmers to suspend all agricultural operations from April 18 until the afternoon of April 21, 2025, and urged travelers, tourists, and transporters to follow administrative and traffic advisories.
Posts on X have echoed the MeT’s alert, with users sharing concerns about potential disruptions and urging residents to stay safe during thunderstorms. The advisory underscores the need for preparedness to mitigate impacts on infrastructure, agriculture, and public safety across the Union Territory.
