Majority of tourists visit Kashmir for the stunning ‘Floating Crafts’ exhibition on Dal Lake; Shikara to get GI registration

Srinagar, March 26, 2025 – One of the most captivating attractions for tourists visiting Kashmir is the evening exhibition of ‘Floating Crafts’ on the iconic Dal Lake. These traditional crafts, particularly the famous Shikara, provide visitors with a unique experience as they float across the tranquil waters of the lake, surrounded by the breathtaking scenery of the Himalayas.

Shikara, which has its roots in Kashmir, will soon be granted Geographical Indication registration, a recognition that will further solidify its cultural significance. The GI tag will not only preserve the traditional craftsmanship behind these unique boats but also help promote their global identity. Along with the Shikara, seven other traditional crafts from the region will also be seeking GI registration, marking a significant step towards protecting the heritage of Kashmir’s artisanal products.

The decision to register these crafts under GI status is part of a broader effort to highlight Kashmir’s rich cultural heritage while providing a boost to its tourism sector. The Shikara, in particular, holds a special place in the hearts of both locals and tourists, symbolizing the essence of Dal Lake and the Kashmiri way of life.
