Srinagar, February 15,2026-: The festival of Mahashivratri was celebrated with deep devotion and spiritual fervour across Kashmir, as devotees thronged temples and offered special prayers to seek the blessings of Lord Shiva.
Major temples witnessed a steady flow of worshippers since early morning. Special prayers and night-long vigils were held at the revered Kheer Bhawani Temple and the historic Shankaracharya Temple, where devotees performed rituals and participated in bhajans dedicated to Lord Shiva.
In Kashmir, Mahashivratri is locally known as ‘Herath’, an important festival for the Kashmiri Pandit community. Families celebrated the occasion with traditional rituals, lighting of lamps, and preparation of special dishes. Devotees observed fasts and offered milk, water, and bael leaves to the Shivling as part of the religious ceremonies.
The temples were decorated with flowers and illuminated with lights, creating a vibrant and spiritual atmosphere. Security arrangements were put in place to ensure smooth conduct of prayers, while local administration officials extended greetings to the people on the auspicious occasion.
Religious leaders highlighted the significance of Mahashivratri as a symbol of faith, devotion, and the triumph of good over evil. They urged people to pray for peace, harmony, and prosperity in Jammu and Kashmir.
The festival concluded with devotees expressing hope and positivity, reinforcing the Valley’s rich cultural and spiritual heritage.
