In a landmark moment for urban renewal in Jammu and Kashmir, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha inaugurated the Kathua Waterfront, a visionary project that reimagines urban spaces through innovation, sustainability, and community engagement. Dedicated to the people of Kathua, this transformative initiative spans a 1,200-meter stretch along the Kathua Canal, bringing new life to the heart of the city. The Kathua Waterfront is a vibrant public space designed to serve citizens of all ages and interests. It features dedicated walking, cycling, and skating tracks, yoga zones, and a lively food street hosting 15 restaurants and cafes. Blending functionality with aesthetics, the project reflects a forward-thinking approach to city planning—enhancing quality of life while promoting economic activity and environmental sustainability. Speaking at the inauguration, LG Manoj Sinha emphasised the project’s alignment with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of urban development that harmonises modern infrastructure with cultural heritage. “This Kathua Waterfront is a unique space that will shape the urban landscape, boost the economy, and strengthen the social fabric of Kathua,” he stated. “I urge other cities to emulate such initiatives to enhance the quality of life for their citizens.” He further underscored the importance of climate-resilient infrastructure and green spaces to address the growing challenges of climate change. The Lieutenant Governor directed officials to integrate biodiversity and sustainability into future urban development projects to ensure a greener and more inclusive future. The project has also generated significant economic opportunities, directly employing around 150 individuals. Notably, a large proportion of the workforce comprises women, highlighting the initiative’s role in promoting gender equality and economic empowerment. “I am delighted that this project has empowered women, contributing to the broader mission of urban rejuvenation,” LG Manoj Sinha remarked. In addition to inaugurating the waterfront, the Lieutenant Governor launched the Integrated Command and Control Centre in Kathua, aimed at improving civic management and governance through smart technology and real-time data analysis. He also flagged off a Bicycle Rally to mark the occasion, promoting fitness, sustainability, and community spirit. Demonstrating a continued focus on inclusive development, LG Manoj Sinha instructed the district administration to identify rural areas for upcoming surgical camps to be organised in collaboration with the Rotary Club, thereby extending healthcare outreach to underserved communities. The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from local residents, especially youth, celebrating Kathua’s emergence as a modern urban hub. Several dignitaries were present, including Chairman of the District Development Council (DDC) Kathua, MLAs Dr. Bharat Bhushan, Rajiv Jasrotia, Darshan Singh, and Dr. Rameshwar Singh. Senior officials such as Ramesh Kumar, Divisional Commissioner Jammu; Bhim Sen Tuti, IGP Jammu; and Dr. Rakesh Minhas, Deputy Commissioner Kathua, also attended the inauguration. The Kathua Waterfront stands as a symbol of Jammu and Kashmir’s evolving urban narrative—one that is rooted in sustainability, driven by community needs, and focused on empowering citizens through inclusive growth.
