Kulgam, March 25,2026- In a notable example of grassroots entrepreneurship, a young entrepreneur from Kulgam, Syed Imdad Hyder, has established a vermicompost production unit under the Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme, creating employment opportunities for around 20 local residents.
The eco-friendly initiative focuses on producing organic manure through vermicomposting, promoting sustainable agricultural practices while reducing dependence on chemical fertilisers.
Officials said the unit not only supports organic farming in the region but also contributes to rural economic growth by generating livelihoods and encouraging youth to take up entrepreneurship.
Hyder’s venture stands as a model of how government-backed schemes like PMEGP can empower young individuals to transform local resources into viable business opportunities, while addressing environmental concerns.
Locals have welcomed the initiative, noting that such projects can significantly boost farm productivity, soil health, and income levels in the district.
The success of the vermicompost unit highlights the growing role of sustainable development and innovation in shaping the future of agriculture in Jammu and Kashmir.
