Srinagar, December 17,2025:A Kolkata-based NGO, Kadam, is transforming the lives of Kashmiri women by training them in wicker work, a craft traditionally dominated by men. The initiative not only preserves the heritage of this age-old craft but also gives it a modern, contemporary touch, making the creations market-ready for both national and international buyers.
Under the programme, women artisans are learning innovative techniques, combining traditional designs with modern aesthetics to create products with commercial potential. Officials and mentors from Kadam emphasise that the training enhances skills, financial independence, and confidence among women, fostering entrepreneurship in rural and urban communities alike.
The NGO’s initiative highlights the role of women empowerment through crafts, providing a sustainable source of livelihood while preserving cultural heritage. The innovative wicker pieces produced by these artisans are already drawing attention for their unique designs and international appeal.
Kadam’s efforts stand as a model for skill development, empowerment, and promotion of handicrafts, demonstrating how traditional crafts can be adapted to modern markets without losing their authenticity.
