SRINAGAR, August 15, 2025 – Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday spoke with Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to address the devastating cloudburst in Kishtwar’s Chasoti village, which claimed 60 lives and injured over 100 during the Machail Mata Yatra on Thursday. Modi reviewed the situation and assured all possible assistance to the affected region.
Abdullah, in a post on X, confirmed the call, stating, “I briefed him about the situation in Kishtwar & the steps being taken by the administration. My government & the people hit by this tragic cloudburst are grateful for his support”. The cloudburst, occurring between noon and 1 pm, triggered flash floods and mudslides, destroying homes, shops, and vehicles in the remote village, a base camp for the annual pilgrimage.
During his Independence Day address at Bakshi Stadium, Srinagar, Abdullah announced the cancellation of the cultural programme and a planned tea party as a mark of respect for the victims. He expressed condolences, noting, “This is a joyous day for the country, but the loss of lives in a cloudburst is heartbreaking”. He reported 21 of 46 recovered bodies identified, with 38 of the 160 rescued in serious condition and many still missing.
Abdullah questioned potential administrative lapses, given prior weather forecasts warning of heavy rains and flash floods. “Could we have taken more steps to save these precious lives? We have to make ourselves accountable,” he said. The administration established a control room in Paddar, 15 km from Chasoti, with helpline numbers (9858223125, 6006701934, 9797504078, 8492886895, 8493801381, 7006463710) to assist affected locals and pilgrims.
Modi, in his Red Fort address, expressed solidarity with victims of recent natural disasters, stating, “Nature is testing us… Our sympathies are with the affected people”. Rescue operations, involving the Army, SDRF, and local police, continue despite heavy rains hampering efforts. The tragedy has underscored the need for improved disaster preparedness, with Abdullah emphasizing accountability and Modi pledging ongoing central support.
