Khelo India Winter Games 2025 commence today in Gulmarg amid snow and security

Gulmarg, Jammu and Kashmir, March 9, 2025 – The second leg of the fifth edition of the Khelo India Winter Games officially commenced today at the world-renowned ski resort of Gulmarg, transforming the snow-laden slopes into a vibrant arena of winter sports. After a delay due to insufficient snowfall earlier this year, recent heavy snowfalls have set the perfect stage for this prestigious event, scheduled to run from March 9 to March 12.

The games were inaugurated with much anticipation, featuring over 800 athletes from across India competing in disciplines such as alpine skiing, Nordic skiing, ski mountaineering, and snowboarding. The opening ceremony, held at the picturesque Kongdoori slopes, was graced by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and the Union Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports, underscoring the event’s national significance. The Indian Army, defending their overall title, will face stiff competition from the Union Territory of Ladakh, who topped the medal tally after the first leg in Leh earlier this year.

The event follows a successful first phase in Ladakh from January 23 to 27, where ice-based events like hockey and skating took center stage. Now, with Gulmarg’s powdery slopes ready, the focus shifts to snow sports. Local athlete Vakar Ahmad Lone, a snowboarding gold medallist, praised the games for providing an international-level platform for Jammu and Kashmir’s talent, stating, “Khelo India Winter Games spotlight local athletes while offering a stunning backdrop for competitors nationwide.”

Security has been a key focus, with multi-layered arrangements ensuring a safe environment for participants and spectators. Authorities have deployed extensive measures around Gulmarg, recently declared a tobacco-free zone alongside Tangmarg, to promote a healthy atmosphere during the games.

The event’s timing aligns with fresh snowfall that accumulated over the past week, with 113 cm recorded between February 25 and 28, revitalizing the slopes after a dry spell that had postponed the original February 22-25 schedule. “The recent snow has made conditions ideal for competition,” a Sports Authority of India (SAI) official noted, expressing confidence in a smooth execution.

Beyond sports, the games are expected to boost Gulmarg’s economy, benefiting hoteliers, pony wallahs, and transporters. Local stakeholders like hotelier Aftab Ahmad see it as a chance to elevate the region’s profile as a premier winter sports and tourism destination. An all-women ski run held on March 8 to mark International Women’s Day served as a fitting prelude, adding to the festive spirit.

As the Khelo India Winter Games unfold over the next four days, Gulmarg stands ready to showcase not only athletic excellence but also the breathtaking beauty of Jammu and Kashmir, reinforcing its nickname as India’s winter sports capital.
