March 03, 2025,Delhi, – Rifat Rasool and Snobar Fayaz, two young athletes from Kashmir, have brought pride to their region by winning silver medals at the 6th Asian Savate (French Boxing) Championship held at Talkatora Stadium in Delhi. Competing in a sport traditionally dominated by men, these champions have showcased the growing prowess of Kashmiri girls on an international stage.
Hailing from Kupwara district, Rifat and Snobar, both students of the Olympians Faisal Martial Art Academy in Handwara, demonstrated remarkable skill and determination during the two-day tournament, which featured around 400 athletes from across Asia. Rifat, competing in the 56 kg category, secured her silver after a series of intense bouts, falling just short of gold to a formidable Nepalese opponent in the final round. Snobar, also in the 56 kg category, displayed resilience but was edged out by a more experienced competitor in her decisive match.
Their achievements have been hailed as a proud moment for Kashmir, with many noting the significance of women breaking barriers in combat sports. “This is a testament to the talent and grit of Kashmiri youth, especially our girls, who are stepping into new arenas and proving they can excel anywhere,” said a supporter on X, echoing widespread sentiment.
Organised by the Asian Savate Confederation under the International Savate Federation , the championship underscored the sport’s rising popularity in the region. The Jammu & Kashmir team, supported by the Savate Association of J&K, also saw other notable performances, including a bronze medal by Snover Fayaz, further highlighting the region’s emerging talent pool.
The success of Rifat and Snobar comes amid a broader narrative of transformation in Kashmir, where the youth are increasingly channeling their energy into sports, entrepreneurship, and other fields. Their medals not only mark a personal triumphs but also inspire a new generation of girls to pursue their ambitions, regardless of societal norms.
