Srinagar, March 12,2026: Radio in Kashmir, which had been gradually fading away, has received a new lease of life thanks to an initiative by the Indian Army. The revival focuses on engaging local youth, providing them a platform to showcase their talents, share ideas, and actively participate in community discussions.
The Community Radio Centres (CRCs) established in rural areas have introduced a revolutionary format for local youth, enabling them to present their skills, experiences, and expertise. The initiative, known as “Radio Youth Ki Awaz,” has become a key platform for discussions on development, social issues, and youth empowerment. Local activists, writers, academics, social leaders, and students actively participate, making it a vibrant hub for community engagement.
The radio initiative serves multiple purposes:
- Highlighting Local Talent and Stories: CRCs broadcast inspirational and success stories, expert advice, and sector-specific knowledge, raising awareness and motivating listeners.
- Enhancing Communication and Engagement: Youth are actively involved in creating content, reels, and social media engagement, reducing communication gaps within communities.
- Strengthening Community Bonds: The stations provide a space for dialogue between the youth, the general public, and the Indian Army, fostering mutual understanding and trust.
While several Community Radio Centres now operate across the valley, experts recommend further improvements, such as introducing multiple languages including Kashmiri, Gojri, and English, expanding content creation, and establishing a sector-level radio hub to connect youth and local influencers. Training programs for students on radio operations and community engagement are also encouraged.
The initiative has successfully bridged gaps between the youth and the jawans, offering a modern, interactive, and digitally connected radio experience. Social media integration has made the radio experience more accessible, enjoyable, and far-reaching.
Community leaders and listeners have expressed their gratitude to the Indian Army for this initiative, which not only revives a traditional medium but also empowers youth, strengthens social ties, and creates a platform for meaningful dialogue in Kashmir.
