Kashmir generates Rs 181 crore from minor mineral extraction over five years

Srinagar, April 11, 2025 – The Kashmir division has recorded a revenue of Rs 181.04 crore from minor mineral extraction over the past five years, showcasing a steady increase in regulated mining activities. The highest annual collection was reported in the financial year 2023–24, amounting to Rs 53.99 crore, reflecting enhanced oversight and streamlined processes in the sector.

The revenue stems from the extraction of minor minerals such as sand, gravel, and stones, which are vital for construction and infrastructure development. Over the five-year period, the region has seen a concerted effort to curb illegal mining, with authorities cracking down on unauthorized operations to ensure sustainable practices and maximize economic benefits.

Data indicates a progressive rise in collections: Rs 24.29 crore in 2019–20, Rs 27.67 crore in 2020–21, Rs 33.45 crore in 2021–22, Rs 41.64 crore in 2022–23, and the peak of Rs 53.99 crore in 2023–24. This growth highlights the region’s focus on leveraging natural resources responsibly while boosting local revenue streams.

The allocation of 58 mining leases to non-locals has sparked discussions on balancing economic gains with local employment opportunities. The government has emphasized stricter regulations to ensure compliance with environmental standards and equitable distribution of benefits.

This milestone underscores Kashmir’s potential in the mineral sector, contributing significantly to the region’s economy while prioritizing sustainable development.
