J&K’s Agriculture Boom: HADP Boosts Dairy, Horticulture & Cold Storage for Farmers’ Prosperity

J&K’s Agriculture Boom: HADP Boosts Dairy, Horticulture & Cold Storage for Farmers’ Prosperity Around 70% of the J&K population is engaged in agriculture and allied sector (roughly 13 lakh), informed the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu & Kashmir, Shri Manoj Sinha. Around 2.62 lakh families are marginal farmers. Two years ago we had developed a scheme called Holistic Agriculture Development Plan. That plan was made with the help of well-known agricultural experts of the country and with the hard work of officers of the agriculture and allied departments of Jammu Kashmir and two agriculture universities. I can say it is a pretty good plan, LG said. About 29 projects are designed in it. And those projects weren’t built in silos, they are connected to each other. Jammu Kashmir faces fodder deficit . We produce 40% of our fodder need. After HADP implementation 50% of our needs are met. When I joined as the Lieutenant Governor here, milk per day was produced at 37,000 per litre. Now 2.25 lakh litres are processed per day which will soon increase to 5 lakh litres, LG stated. Meat and eggs are largely procured from outside and after HADP implementation, 70% needs we will be able to meet. Focus is on High Density Plantation in HADP. Apples, cherries, walnuts are produced in graet quantities here. Fruits get wasted a lot. Cold storage facilty capacity is low. In four years, the number of cold storage facilities have doubled and new ones are coming up. We are paying attention to niche products. Only 14 products are left for GI tagging. With the help of World Bank J&K has sanctioned a VIP project worth 1800 crore. In the Daksh portal, farmers are trained, said the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu & Kashmir, Shri Manoj Sinha.
