Srinagar, May 8, 2025 – Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad, Director of the India Meteorological Department for Jammu and Kashmir, has issued an urgent weather alert, warning of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms expected to lash the region from May 9 to May 12. The advisory highlights risks of flash floods, landslides, and disruptions, urging residents and authorities to prepare.
A robust Western Disturbance will drive the wet spell, bringing 50–80 mm of rain to areas like Srinagar, Anantnag, and Ramban, with gusty winds of 25–35 km/h and lightning likely. Temperatures in Srinagar may drop to 17–19°C during the day and 9–11°C at night due to cloud cover. Hilly regions face elevated landslide risks, while urban areas could see waterlogging.
Dr. Mukhtar emphasized caution, stating, “This intense rainfall could swell rivers and streams, particularly in southern Kashmir and Jammu. Avoid flood-prone areas and limit travel.” He advised farmers to pause field activities, noting a potential dry spell from May 13 for resuming work. The alert follows April 2025’s devastating flash floods in Ramban, which damaged infrastructure and disrupted the Jammu-Srinagar Highway.
Authorities are urged to clear drains and monitor vulnerable zones, while travelers should check road conditions before using major routes. The MeT Department has issued a yellow alert, with updates available through its portal and local outlets like Kashmir Observer. Dr. Mukhtar stressed preparedness, citing increasing climate variability as a factor in frequent extreme weather.
Residents should secure property, avoid waterlogged roads, and follow verified weather updates. As J&K braces for this turbulent spell, staying proactive is key to safety.
