Kashmir Ahead

J&K marks 495 heritage sites to strengthen tourism

Srinagar, May 12,2026- Jammu and Kashmir has identified 495 heritage sites across the Union Territory as part of a major initiative aimed at promoting heritage tourism and preserving the region’s rich cultural legacy.

Officials said the move is intended to strengthen the tourism sector by showcasing the historical, cultural, and architectural significance of various sites spread across Jammu and Kashmir. The identified locations include ancient temples, forts, shrines, heritage buildings, archaeological sites, traditional structures, and culturally important landmarks.

The initiative is expected to enhance tourist engagement, generate employment opportunities, and promote local art, culture, and crafts. Authorities are also working on conservation, restoration, and infrastructure development around several key heritage destinations to improve visitor experience.

Officials noted that heritage tourism has immense potential in Jammu and Kashmir and can play a vital role in diversifying the tourism sector beyond traditional destinations. Special focus is being laid on developing lesser-known heritage locations and integrating them into tourism circuits.

The administration is also exploring digital documentation, heritage mapping, and awareness campaigns to preserve the historical identity of these sites while attracting domestic and international tourists.

Tourism stakeholders have welcomed the initiative, stating that promotion of heritage tourism will help highlight the unique cultural richness of Jammu and Kashmir and contribute to economic growth in the region.
