Srinagar, September 04, 2025 – The Jammu & Kashmir Lakes Conservation and Management Authority (J&K LCMA) has issued a critical advisory for residents living in and around Dal Lake, particularly Dal dwellersand houseboat owners, due to elevated water levels in the River Jhelum. The notice warns that the Jhelum has surpassed the danger mark of 21 feet, and to manage the surge, the gate at Ram Munshi Bagh could be opened at any moment as part of emergency water level management. This potential action is anticipated to further elevate Dal Lake water levels, currently measured at 10.5 feet, potentially causing significant inconvenience and risks to affected communities. The advisory, echoed by official communications from the Information & PR Department, J&K, urges all Dal Lake dwellers and houseboat owners to implement necessary safety precautions, stay vigilant, and prepare to relocate to relief centresdesignated by the District Administration, Srinagar, if needed.
Authorities have also provided emergency contact details for key officers, including Dy. SP Abdul Aziz(9906509892), Tehsildar Khanyar Syed Shahid Hussain (7006188634), and SP East Srinagar (9419003950; 7006628938), to facilitate rapid response during the crisis. This measure comes amid ongoing flood threats in Kashmir, triggered by continuous heavy rains, with Srinagar police and SDRF rescuing over 200 families from vulnerable areas and schools closed for a second day. The LCMA emphasizes preparedness to safeguard lives and properties in this iconic water body, a vital ecological and economic asset for the region.
