J&K forest department reaffirms commitment to conservation on International day of forests

Srinagar, March 21, 2025 – On the occasion of International Day of Forests, the Jammu and Kashmir Forest Department has renewed its pledge to preserve the region’s rich forest cover, a vital lifeline supporting a vast array of flora and fauna. Celebrated annually on March 21, this year’s theme, “Forests and Food,” underscores the critical role forests play in sustaining both nature and humanity.

The J&K Forest Department is working tirelessly to strengthen forest conservation efforts, ensuring the protection of the Union Territory’s lush green landscapes. These forests are essential for regulating the climate, providing clean air and water, and maintaining ecological balance. They also serve as a cornerstone for biodiversity, hosting diverse plant and animal species unique to the region.

Beyond environmental benefits, the department is focused on promoting sustainable livelihoods for forest-dependent communities. Initiatives such as the National Agroforestry Policy and the Van Dhan Yojana are empowering locals by integrating conservation with economic opportunities, offering resources like timber, medicinal plants, and non-timber forest products.

“Forests are not just ecological assets; they are the backbone of our communities,” said a senior official from the J&K Forest Department. “Our efforts aim to balance development with preservation, ensuring the well-being of both people and the environment.”

As J&K faces challenges like forest fires and climate change, today’s reaffirmation highlights the need for collective action. On this International Day of Forests, the department calls on citizens to join in safeguarding Jammu and Kashmir’s natural heritage for future generations.
