J&K Dy CM Surinder Choudhary launches free bus service for women in Jammu

Jammu, April 1, 2025 – Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary launched the Free Bus Service for Women in Jammu, a landmark initiative aimed at promoting women’s empowerment and enhancing accessible mobility across the region. The scheme, which kicked off on April 1, 2025, allows women to travel free of cost on all Smart City and State Road Transport Corporation (SRTC) buses throughout Jammu and Kashmir, reinforcing the government’s commitment to a more inclusive J&K.

The launch ceremony took place in Jammu, where Dy CM Choudhary flagged off the first set of buses under the initiative. Speaking at the event, he emphasized the broader significance of the program. “This is not merely a welfare measure; it’s a bold step toward empowering women, ensuring they have safe and affordable access to transportation, and building a more equitable Jammu and Kashmir,” Choudhary said. The initiative complements the vision of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who has championed gender equity and public welfare since taking office.

The Free Bus Service for Women is expected to benefit thousands of women across urban and rural areas, covering routes serviced by both modern Smart City buses and the extensive SRTC network. By eliminating travel costs, the scheme aims to facilitate greater participation of women in education, employment, and social activities, thereby fostering economic and social empowerment.

Choudhary, who has been vocal about inclusive governance, highlighted the government’s ongoing efforts to address public needs. “Our administration is dedicated to transforming Jammu and Kashmir into a region where every citizen, especially women, can thrive,” he added. The launch aligns with other developmental measures announced recently, reflecting a holistic approach to progress in J&K.

Public sentiment, as seen in posts on X, has been largely supportive, with many lauding the move as a practical step toward gender equality. The initiative also comes amidst a busy week for the administration, with security discussions and other welfare programs underway, though officials have clarified that this scheme stands independent of those efforts.

As of today, April 1, 2025, the Free Bus Service for Women is operational, with authorities ensuring its smooth rollout across Jammu and Kashmir. The government has hinted at further enhancements to public transport infrastructure, signaling a sustained focus on mobility and inclusion.
