Jammu & Kashmir | March 3, 2025- In a heartfelt tribute at the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah honoured the late former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, reflecting on his extraordinary life and enduring contributions to India. Omar Abdullah painted a vivid picture of Singh’s humble beginnings and illustrious career, celebrating him as a towering figure in the nation’s history.
Omar Abdullah began by recounting Singh’s early struggles, noting, “Dr. Manmohan Singh was born in undivided India, in a region that is now part of Pakistan. He hailed from a poor family and studied on the streets in his early years.” The Chief Minister emphasised how these modest origins shaped Singh’s resilience, propelling him to remarkable heights. “He served as an economic advisor, a member of the Planning Commission, and later as Finance Minister before rising to the office of Prime Minister,” Abdullah said, tracing the late leader’s journey from a scholar to a statesman.
The tribute highlighted Singh’s pivotal role as a key architect of India’s economic reforms, particularly during his tenure as Finance Minister in the early 1990s and later as Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014. Abdullah’s remarks resonated with the assembly, underscoring Singh’s legacy as a soft-spoken yet transformative leader who steered India through economic liberalisation and global integration. “His life is a testament to what determination and intellect can achieve, regardless of where one starts,” Omar Abdullah added.
The session, attended by lawmakers from across the political spectrum, served as a moment of unity to honor Singh, who passed away recently, leaving behind a legacy of economic stewardship and quiet dignity. Abdullah’s address not only paid homage to Singh’s contributions but also reminded those present of the power of perseverance—a narrative that struck a chord in a region long familiar with its own challenges.
