Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, May 14, 2025 – Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah held a high-level meeting with Lieutenant General Pratik Sharma, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C) Northern Command, to discuss the prevailing security situation and recent developments along the Line of Control (LoC) and other border areas. The meeting, held on May 13, 2025, was attended by Lieutenant General Prashant Srivastava, GOC 15 Corps, and focused on strengthening security measures in the wake of recent cross-border tensions.
Chief Minister Abdullah praised the Indian Army’s efforts, stating, “General Officer Commanding-in-Chief Northern Command, Lt. Gen. Pratik Sharma, called on me and briefed about the prevailing security situation and recent developments along the LoC and other border areas. He was accompanied by Lt. Gen. Prashant Srivastava, GOC 15 Corps. Our forces are doing a commendable job in protecting the nation.” The discussion underscored the Army’s critical role in safeguarding Jammu and Kashmir amid heightened tensions following Pakistan’s ceasefire violations and the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, 2025, which claimed 26 lives.
Lt Gen Pratik Sharma, who assumed charge of the Northern Command on May 1, 2025, briefed the Chief Minister on ongoing counter-terrorism operations and strategies to secure the 740-km-long LoC. The Northern Command, headquartered in Udhampur, oversees security operations against Pakistan and China in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, working in synergy with local police and security forces. The meeting also addressed the aftermath of the May 7 shelling in Uri and Kupwara, which resulted in civilian casualties, including the tragic death of Nargis Begum.
Abdullah reiterated the J&K government’s commitment to supporting the armed forces and ensuring civilian safety in border regions. Recent visits by both Abdullah and Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to affected areas like Uri and Tangdhar reflect the administration’s focus on rehabilitation and resilience. The government is also prioritizing the strengthening of border hospitals, such as SDH Tangdhar, to enhance emergency response capabilities.
