Srinagar, June 19, 2025 – Chief Minister Omar Abdullah chaired a high-level meeting at the Civil Secretariat in Srinagar to ensure thorough arrangements for Muharram-ul-Haram, the significant Islamic mourning period observed by the Shia community. The meeting focused on facilitating a dignified and smooth observance across Jammu and Kashmir, emphasizing seamless coordination among departments and robust civic amenities.
The meeting saw participation from key figures, including Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Kumar Choudhary, Ministers Sakeena Itoo, Javed Ahmed Rana, and Satish Sharma, Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo, Advisor Nasir Aslam Wani, and senior officials like the Inspector General of Police Kashmir and Divisional Commissioner Kashmir. Deputy Commissioners from Srinagar, Budgam, Baramulla, and Jammu, along with representatives from Shia religious organizations, contributed insights, with remote officers joining via video conference.
Chief Minister Abdullah stressed the need for meticulous planning, given that Muharram observances span the entire two-month-and-eight-day mourning period, beyond just Ashura (the 10th day). With the ongoing Amarnath Yatra, he called for heightened coordination to ensure both events proceed harmoniously. “We must leave no stone unturned to support the community during this sacred time,” he said.
To enhance efficiency, a Secretary-level Nodal Officer was appointed to oversee Muharram arrangements across the Union Territory, ensuring accountability and timely action. Key measures directed include:
- Uninterrupted water and power supply, with provisions for tankers and backup systems.
- Sanitation, street lighting, and road repairs to support processions and gatherings.
- Timely ration distribution and other essential services in Shia-dominated areas.
The Divisional Commissioner Kashmir presented a detailed roadmap, incorporating community feedback to address specific needs. In a related development, Minister Javid Ahmad Dar held a separate review in Budgam, announcing a 24/7 control room to address grievances promptly.
These efforts highlight the J&K government’s commitment to fostering a respectful and peaceful Muharram-ul-Haram, reinforcing unity and administrative diligence across the region.
