Srinagar, August 12, 2025: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, addressing the Tiranga Rally in Srinagar, celebrated the national flag as a symbol of unity and pride. Reflecting on past restrictions, he noted that hoisting the Tricolor was once confined to government properties, barring citizens from displaying it at their homes.
“Usually, we say or hear, what can one person change alone? But remember the days when we were not allowed to hoist our flags at homes,” Abdullah said.He specifically referred to Naveen Jindal, who fought a legal battle to secure the right for Indian citizens to hoist the national flag at their homes. Inspired by seeing flags displayed freely during his studies in the US, Jindal challenged India’s restrictions, leading to a landmark Supreme Court decision in 2004.
This ruling amended the Flag Code of India, allowing citizens to hoist the Tricolor with respect and dignity. “He saw his peers proudly displaying their countries’ flags in their rooms, but he could not. He came back, fought, went to courts, and secured this right,” Abdullah remarked, highlighting the power of individual action.Abdullah urged citizens to uphold the flag’s prestige, stating, “It is our identity; we should respect it.” The Tiranga Rally, a vibrant display of patriotism, underscored Jammu and Kashmir’s journey toward peace and progress, aligning with efforts to foster national unity.
