Omar Abdullah, Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir and National Conference leader, chaired an important meeting with senior officials of the Jal Shakti Department at the Civil Secretariat in Jammu. The meeting was focused on reviewing the progress of ongoing water supply and irrigation projects in the region, as well as formulating strategies to address the water-related challenges faced by both urban and rural communities. During the meeting, Omar Abdullah was briefed on the current initiatives aimed at improving the region’s water infrastructure, including efforts to resolve water scarcity in rural areas and strengthen irrigation systems for farmers. The former Chief Minister stressed the importance of ensuring equitable access to water for all areas, particularly remote and underserved regions, and highlighted the need for effective planning to meet the growing demand for water resources. He emphasised that access to clean and reliable water is a fundamental right for every citizen. He urged that this issue be prioritised in government policies, and called for a holistic approach to water management that not only addresses supply and distribution but also focuses on sustainability. He drew attention to the challenges of pipeline leakages, water contamination, and the increased demand for water due to population growth and rapid urbanisation. Recognising the importance of community participation, Omar Abdullah encouraged the department to involve local communities in water conservation efforts. He stressed that educating people, particularly in rural areas, about water-saving practices and sustainable usage would help reduce the pressure on existing water supply systems. The former Chief Minister directed officials to accelerate the completion of ongoing water supply projects, ensuring they meet their timelines and quality standards. He also sought a detailed action plan to address water supply and irrigation issues, particularly in regions that have been facing persistent shortages. Omar Abdullah called for timely interventions and a greater sense of urgency in tackling these challenges. In his concluding remarks, he reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring that every citizen has access to clean and safe drinking water. He urged officials to focus on projects that would improve the lives of citizens, particularly in areas where water scarcity has had a significant impact on agriculture, health, and livelihoods.
