Srinagar, August 2, 2025 — Jammu and Kashmir has made significant strides in enhancing rural connectivity under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana-III (PMGSY-III), with the completion of 169 rural roadsspanning 1,465.65 kilometers and 15 bridges as of July 28, 2025, according to the Ministry of Rural Development. The data, presented in the Rajya Sabha in response to a query by MP Harsh Mahajan, highlights the Union Territory’s progress in linking remote areas to markets, schools, and healthcare facilities.
Under PMGSY-III, launched in 2019 to upgrade 1.25 lakh kilometers of rural roads across India, J&K was sanctioned 223 roads and 66 bridges, with a total project value of ₹1,752.12 crore. Of this, ₹1,580.72 crorehas been spent, including the state’s share. The completed infrastructure is part of a broader effort to improve access in rural J&K, particularly in hilly and remote regions, aligning with the scheme’s goal of fostering socio-economic development.
Nationally, PMGSY-III has sanctioned 15,972 roads covering 1,22,419 kilometers and 3,212 bridges, with 11,740 roads (98,653 km) and 1,380 bridges completed by July 28, 2025. The Ministry emphasized that all ongoing works are targeted for completion by March 2026, ensuring durable, all-weather connectivity for rural communities. In J&K, challenges like forest clearances have delayed some projects, but the UT administration is urged to accelerate efforts to meet deadlines while maintaining quality standards.
The completed roads and bridges under PMGSY-III are set to enhance access to essential services, boost local economies, and improve living conditions in J&K’s rural areas, reinforcing the vision of inclusive development.
