Jammu, May 8, 2025 – The automobile sector in Jammu and Kashmir recorded a modest growth of 1.33% in vehicle retail sales for April 2025, with commercial vehicles playing a pivotal role despite a slight decline in their category. According to the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations Jammu, the overall retail sales reached 16,291 units in April 2025, up from 16,077 units in April 2024, signalling resilience in the region’s auto industry.
The commercial vehicle segment, while experiencing a 5.84% decline with 1,144 units sold in April 2025 compared to 1,215 units in April 2024, remains a cornerstone of the region’s auto sector. This category supports critical industries such as logistics, construction, and public transport, contributing significantly to J&K’s economic activity. The slight downturn is attributed to seasonal fluctuations and supply chain challenges, but dealers remain optimistic about recovery in the coming months.
In contrast, the three-wheeler category posted an impressive 18.24% growth, with 966 units sold in April 2025 compared to 817 units the previous year. This surge reflects rising demand for affordable last-mile transport solutions in both urban and rural areas. The two-wheeler segment also saw a marginal increase of 1.13%, with 8,835 units sold compared to 8,736 units in April 2024, driven by demand for personal mobility. However, the passenger vehicle category experienced a slight dip of 0.12%, highlighting uneven performance across segments.
Sanjay Aggarwal, chairperson of FADA Jammu, noted the mixed trends in the market. “While commercial vehicles and passenger vehicles faced degrowth, the overall auto sector in J&K showed resilience with a 1.33% increase in retail sales. The robust performance of three-wheelers and steady demand for two-wheelers indicate a positive outlook for the industry,” Aggarwal said. He emphasised the role of commercial vehicles in powering economic activities, particularly in infrastructure and trade, despite temporary setbacks.
The growth in J&K’s auto sector comes amid broader economic challenges, including recent natural calamities and security concerns in the region. The Ramban catastrophe in April 2025, which damaged 222 vehicles among other losses, underscored the need for robust transport solutions to aid recovery efforts. Commercial vehicles are expected to play a critical role in rebuilding infrastructure and supporting affected communities, further highlighting their importance to the region’s economy
The auto industry in J&K is also benefiting from improving road connectivity and government initiatives to boost tourism and trade. However, dealers urge policymakers to address supply chain bottlenecks and provide incentives to sustain growth in the commercial vehicle segment. As the region navigates these challenges, the automobile sector remains a vital driver of economic growth, with commercial vehicles at its core.
