On the auspicious occasion of International Labour Day, May 1, 2025, we extend heartfelt greetings to the hardworking workforce across India, with a special tribute to the resilient workers of Jammu and Kashmir. Invoking the blessings of Lord Vishwakarma, the divine craftsman, we honour the determination, spirit, and commitment of these workers who are transforming the Union Territory into a beacon of progress, contributing significantly to the vision of a Viksit Bharat under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The workforce of Jammu and Kashmir embodies the essence of toil and resilience, playing a pivotal role in the region’s socio-economic transformation. Known for its breathtaking landscapes and rich cultural heritage, Kashmir is now scripting a new narrative of development, driven by its skilled artisans, farmers, construction workers, and entrepreneurs. From the intricate craftsmanship of Pashmina shawls and Kashmiri carpets to the cultivation of world-renowned saffron and apples, the workers of Kashmir blend tradition with innovation, contributing to both local and national economies.
Since the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019, Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed a surge in developmental initiatives, creating new opportunities for its workforce. Under PM Modi’s leadership, schemes like Make in India, Skill India, and Atmanirbhar Bharat have empowered Kashmiri workers, equipping them with modern skills and access to global markets. The construction of infrastructure projects, such as highways, tunnels, and the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link, has not only generated employment but also showcased the dedication of Kashmir’s labour force in building a robust foundation for a developed India.
The artisans of Kashmir, renowned for their woodworking, papier-mâché, and embroidery, are preserving the region’s cultural legacy while adapting to contemporary demands. Government initiatives, including the Handicraft and Handloom Development Schemes, have provided training, financial support, and market linkages, enabling these workers to thrive in a competitive world. Similarly, agricultural labourers in the saffron fields of Pampore and apple orchards of Shopian are embracing sustainable practices, boosting productivity and contributing to India’s agricultural exports.
International Labour Day serves as a reminder of the transformative power of labour in Kashmir’s journey toward peace, prosperity, and integration with the rest of India. The region’s youth, once marred by unrest, are now actively participating in skill development programs and entrepreneurial ventures, reflecting a renewed sense of hope and purpose. Women workers, too, are breaking barriers, contributing to sectors like handicrafts, tourism, and education, further strengthening the socio-economic fabric of the Union Territory.
As we salute the toil and commitment of Kashmir’s workforce, we acknowledge their role in shaping a Viksit Bharat. Their efforts align with the nation’s aspirations to become a global economic powerhouse while preserving its cultural diversity. However, challenges such as seasonal unemployment, skill gaps, and the need for better working conditions persist. The government’s focus on infrastructure, tourism, and industrial growth in Kashmir, coupled with policies ensuring social security and fair wages, will further empower its workers to overcome these hurdles.
This Labour Day, let us reaffirm our commitment to supporting the workers of Jammu and Kashmir, ensuring they have the tools, opportunities, and respect they deserve. Their hard work is not just building roads, crafts, or harvests—it is laying the foundation for a peaceful, prosperous, and united India. As we celebrate their contributions, we look forward to a future where Kashmir’s workforce continues to shine as a symbol of resilience and progress in the journey toward a developed nation.
