Kashmir, May 11, 2025 – Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) has announced the rescheduling of its entrance examinations for students from Jammu and Kashmir, originally set for May 10-11, 2025, due to ongoing regional challenges. The decision, made at the request of the Jammu and Kashmir government, aims to prioritize student safety and well-being amid heightened tensions and logistical disruptions in the region.
The entrance tests for the 2025-26 academic session, which commenced on April 26 and are scheduled to conclude by May 31, have been disrupted for J&K students due to travel restrictions, including the closure of Srinagar airport and the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, compounded by landslides and security concerns. These challenges have left many students stranded, unable to travel to examination centers in New Delhi.
J&K Education Minister Sakina Itoo confirmed the development on X, stating, “Considering the ongoing situation, Jamia Millia Islamia will reschedule the admission test for students from Jammu and Kashmir at the request of the J&K Government. I thank the university administration for understanding the current challenges faced by the students of J&K.”
The decision follows appeals from student organizations, including the Jammu and Kashmir Students Association, All India Students’ Association (AISA), and Students’ Federation of India (SFI), which highlighted the plight of students stuck in transit or unable to travel due to the volatile situation. The J&K Students Association had earlier urged Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and JMI Vice-Chancellor Prof. Mazhar Asif to postpone the exams or conduct a separate round for affected students.
JMI issued an official statement: “JMI announces rescheduling of the Admission Tests to be held on May 10-11, 2025 for students of Jammu and Kashmir, considering the ongoing situation and factoring in the well-being of students.” While new dates for J&K students will be announced, the exams for other candidates will proceed as planned.
The rescheduling comes amid broader regional disruptions, with educational institutions in Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Rajasthan, and Ladakh closed due to security concerns. Student outfits have also set up helplines to assist affected students, particularly those in border areas facing travel and communication challenges.
This move underscores JMI’s commitment to ensuring equitable access to education for students facing extraordinary circumstances. The university is closely monitoring the situation to provide a safe and fair examination process for J&K students.
