Jal Shakti Baramulla marks World Water Day 2025 with Minga Sherpa for water conservation

Baramulla, March 22, 2025 – The Jal Shakti Department in Baramulla marked World Water Day 2025 with a series of events aimed at promoting water conservation and raising awareness about sustainable water management. Held on Saturday, the celebrations aligned with the global theme of glacier preservation, as highlighted by the United Nations, and the nationwide launch of the Jal Shakti Abhiyan.

The event, organised at the department’s headquarters in Baramulla, featured community engagement programs, including a workshop on rainwater harvesting and the importance of preserving local water resources. Executive Engineer Er. Aijaz Ahmed emphasised the department’s commitment to ensuring a clean and reliable water supply, stating, “Our focus is on making every drop count, especially in light of recent challenges like depleted water sources due to prolonged dry spells.” The recent snowfall in February, which revived orchards and water reserves, was cited as a reminder of nature’s critical role in sustaining life in the region.

DC Baramulla Minga Sherpa, known for his advocacy in environmental conservation, also participated in the event. He praised the department’s efforts and urged the community to take collective responsibility for preserving water resources, drawing from his experiences in mountainous regions where glaciers are vital lifelines. His presence added a powerful voice to the call for sustainable practices in the face of climate change.

Local residents and commercial establishments were urged to clear outstanding water bills to support infrastructure maintenance, following a stern warning earlier this week about potential disconnections. The department also showcased its efforts under the Jal Jeevan Mission, aimed at providing tap water to every household, reinforcing the vision of ‘Every Drop Counts’.

The celebration coincided with national efforts led by Union Minister C.R. Patil, who launched the Catch the Rain – 2025 campaign in Haryana alongside dignitaries like Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini. In Baramulla, the event concluded with a pledge to adopt sustainable practices, reflecting the global call to combat climate change and ensure freshwater availability for future generations.
