IWAI partners with Jammu and Kashmir government to boost river cruise tourism

Srinagar I March 7, 2025

The Inland Waterways Authority of India has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Government of Jammu and Kashmir to enhance river cruise tourism across three National Waterways in the Union Territory. The agreement was formalised during a signing ceremony at the Chintan Shivir, an important event held in Srinagar, with Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal in attendance.

National Waterways in Jammu and Kashmir

Jammu and Kashmir is home to three of India’s 111 National Waterways, which are set to become major attractions for river cruise tourism. The waterways include:

  • River Chenab (NW-26)
  • River Jhelum (NW-49)
  • River Ravi (NW-84)

These rivers, known for their scenic beauty, offer vast potential for tourism development, with a focus on river cruises that will highlight the region’s natural charm.

Infrastructure Development Plans

As part of the MoU, IWAI will take the lead in developing essential infrastructure to support the river cruise tourism initiative. This includes the construction of:

  • Waterside Infrastructure: Ten floating jetties will be built to facilitate smooth cruise operations along the waterways.
  • Landside Infrastructure: Waiting halls and other amenities will be set up to enhance the overall passenger experience.

These developments are expected to make river cruising an attractive and seamless option for tourists.

A Step Toward Economic Growth

The partnership aims to unlock the tourism potential of Jammu and Kashmir, offering visitors a unique, sustainable travel experience that combines the region’s natural beauty and cultural heritage. Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal emphasized the importance of the project in promoting inland water transport while enhancing the region’s tourism offerings.

The collaboration is expected to attract both domestic and international tourists, providing a significant boost to the local economy and creating new opportunities for growth in the tourism and hospitality sectors.

With these developments, Jammu and Kashmir’s National Waterways are set to become an iconic part of India’s inland water transport and tourism landscape.
