Srinagar, September 16, 2025 – The Indian Army has achieved a significant milestone by operating its first dedicated freight train, transporting 753 metric tonnes of essential supplies from Banihal Dry Port near Samba to Anantnag via the newly operational Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL). This marks a major step in ensuring reliable logistics for troops stationed in Jammu and Kashmir during the harsh winter months. The train, which completed its journey on September 12-13, carried critical Advance Winter Stocking supplies to support military operations in the region. Previously, the Army relied on road convoys along the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, which often faced closures due to heavy snow and landslides. The USBRL, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in June 2025, offers an all-weather rail connection, significantly enhancing the Army’s operational efficiency.“This is a game-changer for our logistics,” said Lt Col Suneel Bartwal, a defence spokesperson.
“The rail link ensures uninterrupted supplies to our troops, even in extreme conditions, while also supporting the local economy.”In a unique move, the return journey of the train was used to transport Kashmiri apples from the Valley to markets across India. This initiative provides a lifeline to local farmers, who have struggled with transportation challenges due to frequent highway disruptions. By facilitating faster delivery of perishable goods, the Army’s effort is set to bolster the region’s fruit industry and support the livelihoods of thousands of growers.Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah praised the initiative, noting its dual benefits for security and economic growth.
“This is a commendable step by the Indian Army and the Railways. We hope to see more such trains to help our farmers,” he said. The USBRL, a 272-km engineering marvel featuring the world’s highest railway bridge over the Chenab River, is transforming connectivity in the region. Beyond military logistics, it promises to revive Kashmir’s fruit and handicraft sectors by providing reliable access to national markets. This pioneering effort underscores the Indian Army’s role in both national security and regional development, setting a precedent for innovative civil-military collaboration.
