IIT Jammu’s advanced drones set to strengthen Indian Army capabilities

Jammu, May 1, 2026- In a significant step toward strengthening India’s self-reliance in defence technology, researchers at IIT Jammu have developed advanced drones tailored for operational use by the Indian Army. Built using cutting-edge carbon and optical fiber technology, these drones are designed to be lightweight, durable, and highly resistant to detection and electronic jamming.

According to officials, the drones have successfully completed multiple trial phases, demonstrating their capability to operate in challenging terrains and hostile environments. Their low radar signature and enhanced stealth features make them particularly effective for surveillance and reconnaissance missions in sensitive border areas.

Experts involved in the project highlighted that the integration of optical fiber components significantly improves signal security, making the drones less vulnerable to interception or disruption. This advancement is expected to provide a strategic edge to Indian forces, especially in modern warfare scenarios where electronic warfare plays a crucial role.

The development aligns with India’s broader push for indigenous defence manufacturing under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative. Once formally inducted, these drones are likely to enhance real-time intelligence gathering, border monitoring, and tactical operations for the armed forces.

Officials indicated that the induction process may begin soon, marking a major milestone in collaboration between academic institutions and defence agencies. The innovation underscores the growing role of Indian institutes in delivering advanced, homegrown defence solutions.
