IIT Jammu teams tackle healthcare and environmental challenges at SAHK 2024

Team Gadget and Team CarbonX, both participating in the SAHK 2024 under the Student Open Innovation category, are addressing two critical global challenges: non-invasive continuous glucose detection for children and advanced carbon capture technology aimed at combating climate change. Both teams, representing the innovative spirit of IIT Jammu, are developing cutting-edge solutions that blend healthcare innovation with a commitment to environmental sustainability. Team Gadget is focusing on a pressing challenge faced by parents of young children with diabetes: the need for constant glucose monitoring. Traditional methods, like finger pricks, can be painful and distressing for children. To solve this, Team Gadget is developing a non-invasive, continuous glucose monitoring system integrated into a wearable smartwatch. This technology measures glucose concentration through the skin, offering a pain-free, real-time solution that enables parents to track their child’s glucose levels continuously and comfortably. This system aims to make glucose monitoring more accessible and less traumatic for children, providing a significant improvement in managing diabetes, especially for young children. On the other hand, Team CarbonX is addressing the urgent need for carbon capture to mitigate the effects of climate change. They are working on an advanced Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) system to capture CO2 from industrial emissions. PSA is a proven technology for separating gases, and the team is refining it to enhance its efficiency in trapping carbon dioxide. Once captured, the CO2 can be converted into valuable products such as biofuels through a process called ethanization. This innovative solution not only helps reduce carbon emissions but also creates a sustainable circular carbon economy by turning waste CO2 into usable resources. By addressing these two critical issues—healthcare and environmental sustainability—Team Gadget and Team CarbonX showcase the power of technology innovation in solving real-world problems. Both teams are committed to improving public health and reducing the environmental impact of carbon emissions, making significant strides toward a more sustainable and healthier future. Their participation in SAHK 2024 reflects the IIT Jammu spirit of fostering creativity and problem-solving to tackle some of the most pressing challenges of our time.
