Mumbai I March 08, 2025
In a groundbreaking celebration of International Women’s Day, the Central Railway operated the prestigious CSMT-Sainagar Shirdi Vande Bharat Express with an all-women crew today, marking a significant milestone in India’s railway history.
A Symbol of Empowerment Takes the Tracks
The train, departing from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) at 6:20 AM, was piloted by Asia’s first woman loco pilot, Surekha Yadav, alongside assistant loco pilot Sangeeta Kumari. This historic run underscores the growing presence and capability of women in traditionally male-dominated fields like railway operations. “I am happy to be part of this team,” said Yadav during the departure. “I wish all women a Happy Women’s Day.”
All-Women Team: From Loco Pilots to Hostesses
The crew wasn’t limited to the driver’s cabin. The train featured an entirely female staff, including train manager, ticket examiners (TCs), and hostesses. Leading the ticket-checking team were head ticket examiners Anushka KP and MJ Rajput, supported by senior examiners Sarika Ojha, Suvarna Pashte, Kavita Maral, and Manisha Ram. Central Railway’s Chief Public Relations Officer, Dr. Swapnil Nila, highlighted the initiative, stating, “Indian Railways has always enabled women’s empowerment. Today, we’re proud to run the CSMT-Shirdi Vande Bharat with an all-women crew.”
Celebrating Fearless Women Who Drive Change
The event aligns with the spirit of International Women’s Day 2025, celebrating women who break barriers and drive progress. Central Railway emphasized this in a statement: “On International Women’s Day, we celebrate fearless women who shatter barriers and drive change, one journey at a time.” The all-women-operated Train No. 22223 left CSMT amid cheers, symbolizing not just a journey from Mumbai to Shirdi, but a leap toward gender inclusivity in India’s transport sector.
A Milestone for Central Railway and Beyond
This isn’t just a one-off event but part of Central Railway’s broader commitment to empowering women in key roles. The initiative has been lauded as an inspiration for future generations, with officials noting it could encourage more women to take up challenging positions in railway operations. The Vande Bharat Express, known for its speed and modern amenities, became a fitting stage for this display of talent and determination.
Public Response: Pride and Inspiration
Passengers and onlookers at CSMT expressed pride in the milestone. Social media buzzed with posts praising the move, with one X user noting, “Vande Bharat Express operated by all women crew on the occasion of Women’s Day from Mumbai—a proud moment!” The event also garnered attention for its timing, coinciding with global celebrations of women’s achievements.
Looking Ahead: More Inclusive Tracks
As the train made its way to Sainagar Shirdi, it carried more than passengers—it carried a message of possibility. With women at the helm, the journey reflects a shifting narrative in India’s workforce, where skill and dedication transcend gender. Central Railway officials hinted at more such initiatives, signaling a future where inclusivity powers the nation’s rails.
