Srinagar, March 27, 2025 – The iconic Amira Kadal Bridge, one of Srinagar’s oldest wooden structures, is nearing the completion of a significant transformation under the Srinagar Smart City Project. Authorities have confirmed that the refurbished bridge, now 90% complete, is set to open for public use in the coming weeks, promising to become a cultural and scenic landmark in the heart of the city.
The renovation, part of a Rs 7.17 crore initiative, aims to preserve the architectural heritage of the Amira Kadal Bridge while adapting it to contemporary needs. Unlike its adjacent vehicular counterpart, the revamped wooden bridge will be exclusively pedestrian-friendly, offering a serene space for locals and tourists alike. Drawing inspiration from other iconic Srinagar bridges like Zero Bridge and Habba Kadal, the design incorporates traditional wooden elements with modern aesthetics, ensuring both durability and visual appeal. The project also includes plans for kiosks along the bridge, to be managed by the tourism department or outsourced, fostering local commerce and cultural exchange.
Chief Executive Officer of Srinagar Smart City Limited, Dr. Owais Ahmed, highlighted the bridge’s potential as a tourism booster. “Given its strategic location near Lal Chowk, the Amira Kadal Bridge will attract significant footfall. It’s not just a crossing but a vibrant hub that will showcase Kashmir’s rich heritage,” he said. The initiative aligns with broader efforts to revive heritage tourism in the region, transforming the bridge into a pedestrian walkway that offers breathtaking views of the Jhelum River and the bustling cityscape beyond.
The transformation process has involved meticulous restoration of the bridge’s original abutments, coupled with the addition of modern structural enhancements. Once a vital link connecting Srinagar’s commercial hubs, the Amira Kadal Bridge had deteriorated over time, prompting this ambitious overhaul. The project, which began gaining momentum in recent years, faced delays due to logistical challenges and the relocation of nearby shops, but officials now express confidence in meeting the impending deadline.
Local residents and business owners have welcomed the development, anticipating an economic uplift from increased tourism. “This bridge is a piece of our history. Seeing it reborn as a cultural spot feels like a gift to Srinagar,” said Mohammad Ashraf, a shopkeeper near Lal Chowk.
