Gulmarg | March 12, 2025 – Authorities in Gulmarg have launched extensive snow clearance operations to ensure uninterrupted connectivity to the renowned ski resort town, following recent heavy snowfall that blanketed the region. The efforts, spearheaded by the Mechanical and Hospital Engineering Department in coordination with the Border Roads Organisation , aim to keep vital roads accessible for tourists, locals, and emergency services.
The picturesque town, nestled in the Pir Panjal range, experienced significant snow accumulation in late February and early March, with reports indicating up to 30 centimeters of fresh snow in some areas. While the snowfall transformed Gulmarg into a winter paradise, attracting visitors for the recently concluded Khelo India Winter Games (March 9-12), it also disrupted transportation, temporarily isolating the town from neighboring areas like Tangmarg and Baramulla.
A senior official from the BRO stated, “Our teams are working round-the-clock to clear the Gulmarg-Tangmarg road and other key routes. The priority is to maintain safe passage, especially with the high volume of tourists this season.” Heavy machinery, including snowplows and excavators, has been deployed to tackle the snow-covered roads, with crews focusing on avalanche-prone stretches to prevent further blockages.
The renewed push for snow clearance comes after a challenging winter marked by a prolonged dry spell earlier in the season, followed by intense western disturbances that brought both relief and logistical hurdles. The recent snowfall, while a boon for tourism and winter sports, triggered minor snow slides in early March, underscoring the need for robust infrastructure support. No casualties or significant damage were reported, but officials have urged caution in vulnerable areas.
Local residents and businesses have welcomed the efforts, noting their importance to the region’s economy. “Gulmarg thrives on tourism, and clear roads mean more visitors can reach us safely,” said Mohammad Ashraf, a hotel owner in the town. The operations also follow a controversial fashion show held on March 10, which drew global attention to Gulmarg but highlighted the need for reliable access amid unpredictable weather.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who has been closely monitoring the situation, emphasized the government’s commitment to improving infrastructure. “We’re adapting to changing climate patterns to ensure Gulmarg remains a world-class destination,” he said during a recent address. The administration has also hinted at future plans, including heli-skiing initiatives, which would further necessitate dependable road networks.
The Meteorological Department has forecast partly cloudy skies for the next few days, offering a window for clearance teams to make headway. However, travellers are advised to check road conditions before embarking on journeys to higher altitudes. As of today, the main access routes are partially operational, with full restoration expected soon, weather permitting.
