GULMARG, JULY 29: The world-famous tourist destination Gulmarg is currently hosting a vibrant week-long event titled ‘Aakanksha Haat’, aimed at promoting local artisans, self-help groups (SHGs), and rural entrepreneurs from across Jammu and Kashmir. The event, inaugurated earlier this week, has already attracted hundreds of domestic and international tourists, eager to experience the region’s rich cultural heritage.
Organized by the District Administration Baramulla in collaboration with the Department of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj, the Aakanksha Haat is envisioned as a platform for economic empowerment, particularly for women-led SHGs, traditional craftsmen, and young entrepreneurs from remote areas.
The stalls showcase a variety of handmade products, including Pashmina shawls, papier-mâché items, willow baskets, local spices, and organic produce, along with live demonstrations by artisans. Cultural performances and local cuisine stalls have added to the festive ambience.
Speaking at the inauguration, officials emphasized that such initiatives not only promote self-reliance and entrepreneurship but also provide direct market access to local producers. Tourists expressed appreciation for the opportunity to connect with authentic Kashmiri culture beyond scenic views.
“This is not just an exhibition; it’s a step toward Atmanirbhar Bharat from the grassroots,” said one of the visiting officers.
The Aakanksha Haat will run throughout the week, offering visitors a chance to shop, learn, and support local livelihoods.
