Srinagar, October 1, 2025 – The iconic Gulmarg Gondola, Asia’s highest and longest cable car system, has officially reopened for the season following a thorough week-long safety inspection and maintenance regime. Phase-I operations resumed on September 30, 2025, after passing rigorous tests conducted by the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM), Poma France, in collaboration with the Jammu and Kashmir Cable Car Corporation (JKCCC). This annual mandatory closure from September 22 to 29 ensured compliance with international safety standards, boosting confidence among tourists ahead of the peak autumn and winter seasons.Managing Director of the JKCCC, Syed Qamar Sajad, announced the resumption during a press briefing, highlighting the enhanced carrying capacity of the cabins.
“The Gondola has now resumed after successfully passing all safety checks. With trials including cable strength assessments, full cabin load-bearing tests, and functionality reviews completed without issues, Phase-I will now operate more efficiently, reducing wait times during peak hours,” Sajad stated. Officials emphasized that the upgrades aim to handle the growing influx of domestic and international visitors, with Gulmarg already recording a healthy tourist footfall in recent weeks. The Gulmarg Gondola, a joint venture between the Jammu and Kashmir government and French firm Pomagalski, ferries approximately 600 passengers per hour across its two phases. Phase-I connects the resort town at 2,650 meters (8,694 feet) to the scenic Kongdoori station in the bowl-shaped valley, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the Pir Panjal mountain range and meadows blanketed in autumn hues.
The second phase extends to the Apharwat Peak at 4,260 meters (13,976 feet), a haven for adventure enthusiasts and skiers. This year’s inspection was particularly meticulous, involving certified engineers who serviced mechanical and electrical systems to prevent any operational glitches. “Annual inspections by the OEM directly address safety concerns, building visitor trust and ensuring world-class services,” Sajad added. Local tourism stakeholders, including hoteliers in Tangmarg, welcomed the news, noting its potential to invigorate the hospitality sector. “The Gondola is the heartbeat of Kashmir’s tourism appeal. Resuming after proper safety checks will reassure families and boost businesses reliant on this iconic ride,” remarked a prominent hotel owner.
The reopening coincides with early signs of winter, including light snowfall in Gulmarg, setting the stage for an exciting ski season. Adventure seekers and nature lovers are encouraged to book tickets in advance, with on-cabin options available daily from 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM at the waiting hall. The JKCCC also promotes eco-friendly initiatives, such as the in-house “Gondola Kehwa Ice” café, enhancing the overall visitor experience. As Jammu and Kashmir continues to emerge as a premier destination, the Gulmarg Gondola stands as a testament to sustainable tourism, blending thrill with safety.
