Gulmarg and Tangmarg declared Tobacco-Free tourist spots

Srinagar I February 18, 2025: The Jammu and Kashmir authorities have officially declared the renowned ski resort of Gulmarg and the picturesque tourist destination of Tangmarg as tobacco-free zones. This move, aimed at promoting public health, was announced through an order issued by the Baramulla District Magistrate on Sunday.

The decision comes in light of the growing health concerns linked to tobacco consumption. According to the Baramulla District Magistrate, nearly 40 percent of non-communicable diseases, including cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and lung disorders, are associated with tobacco use. The declaration of these popular tourist spots as tobacco-free zones aims to mitigate these risks and ensure a cleaner and healthier environment for both tourists and locals.

The new initiative aligns with the Central Government’s Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act of 2003, which prohibits the advertisement, production, supply, and distribution of tobacco products. The Act aims to protect the youth and the broader population from the harmful effects of tobacco consumption and second-hand smoke.

With this move, the Jammu and Kashmir government hopes to set an example for other tourist destinations in the region, promoting a tobacco-free and health-conscious tourism environment. The tobacco-free zones are expected to enhance the appeal of Gulmarg and Tangmarg as family-friendly destinations, attracting tourists who prioritise clean and safe environments.

By declaring these areas tobacco-free, authorities are reaffirming their commitment to improving public health and providing a healthier, more sustainable tourism experience.
