Kashmir Ahead

Government-backed dairy unit boosts rural economy in J&K’s Reasi

Reasi, April 14,2026- Government-supported rural entrepreneurship is steadily strengthening the grassroots economy across Jammu & Kashmir, with a successful dairy unit in Madi village of Reasi district emerging as a model of sustainable livelihood generation.

Established under the Integrated Dairy Development Scheme (IDDS), the unit was set up with financial assistance of ₹3 lakh. Today, it produces approximately 100 litres of milk daily, ensuring a steady source of income for the entrepreneur while contributing to the local dairy supply chain.

Moving beyond traditional milk production, the unit has diversified into value-added dairy products such as Kalari—a popular local cheese—and processed cheese, significantly enhancing profitability and market reach. This diversification reflects a growing trend among rural entrepreneurs in J&K to adopt innovative approaches for income generation.

Importantly, the dairy unit has also created employment opportunities for four local residents, reinforcing the role of such initiatives in addressing rural unemployment and promoting inclusive growth.

Officials highlight that schemes like IDDS are playing a crucial role in empowering rural communities by providing financial support, technical guidance, and market linkages. The success of the Madi village dairy unit underscores the transformative impact of government-backed entrepreneurship in boosting rural livelihoods and strengthening the region’s economy.

As Jammu & Kashmir continues to focus on self-reliance and grassroots development, such initiatives are paving the way for a more resilient and prosperous rural landscape.
