SRINAGAR, JULY 25: In a heartwarming and empowering comeback, the Reliance Foundation Youth Sports (RFYS) U-19 football tournament has returned to Kashmir — and it’s the young girls who are stealing the spotlight.
From the lush green fields of Srinagar to the cheering sidelines, the energy is electric as girls from various schools lace up their boots, don their jerseys, and take to the pitch with determination and pride. For many, this marks the first time they’ve played in a structured tournament, and their joy is unmistakable.
“Playing here makes me feel free,” says Insha, a Class 11 student from Baramulla. “We’ve always loved football, but this platform has given us the confidence to dream bigger.”
The RFYS tournament, known for nurturing grassroots sports talent across India, is now becoming a beacon of hope and opportunity for Kashmiri girls who have long faced social and cultural barriers in sports. With strong performances, teamwork, and discipline on display, these young athletes are not only chasing goals on the field but also breaking stereotypes off it.
Teachers and parents alike have praised the initiative, noting how sports are helping build confidence, leadership, and a sense of purpose among the youth — especially young girls.
“This tournament is more than just a game. It’s about showing that our daughters can shine just as bright,” said one proud parent in the stands.
As whistles blow and matches unfold, the spirit of the game in Kashmir is clearly alive — and this time, it’s the girls leading the way.
