GDC Marh Celebrates National Youth Day with enthusiasm and purpose

JAMMU, JANUARY 12: Government Degree College (GDC) Marh, in collaboration with the Viksit Bharat Committee and the NSS unit, celebrated National Youth Day to honor the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda. The event, organized under the aegis of the Higher Education Department, was held under the supervision of Principal Prof. (Dr.) Rakesh Kumar Koul and featured a variety of activities aimed at inspiring and empowering the youth.

In his address, Principal Prof. Koul highlighted the significance of the day, noting that Swami Vivekananda was not only a spiritual leader but also a beacon of inspiration for the youth. “This day serves as a call to action for young minds to realize their full potential and contribute to building a better future,” he remarked. He further emphasized that the teachings of Swami Vivekananda—rooted in courage, conviction, and self-discipline—continue to guide and motivate young people toward a life of purpose and service.

To imbue the spirit of selfless service, which Swami Vivekananda advocated, the NSS unit organized a cleanliness drive on the college campus. Under the theme of Shramdaan Mahadhan, students participated in the initiative by collecting waste, ensuring proper segregation, and disposing of it responsibly. This activity was a practical demonstration of the values of discipline, responsibility, and community service.

The celebrations also included a special screening of a film on the life and teachings of Swami Vivekananda, curated by Anjana Chib, Convener of the Viksit Bharat Committee. The movie highlighted the key principles taught by Vivekananda, such as compassion, optimism, faith, humor, and mindfulness. These timeless teachings were intended to encourage students to cultivate qualities like self-reliance, discipline, courage, and inner strength—traits essential for achieving greater goals in life.

In addition, the event was featured on the My Bharat Portal, an initiative designed to promote patriotism, nationalism, and community service among the youth. The portal encourages volunteerism, fosters civic engagement, and helps develop leadership skills. The college has registered 87 volunteers on this platform, marking a significant contribution to the broader goals of national development.

The day concluded with students and faculty attending the live streaming of the National Viksit Bharat Young Leaders Dialogue 2025, which further reinforced the importance of youth participation in shaping the future of the nation.

The event was meticulously coordinated by Dr. Shakun Sharma (HOD, Sociology), with contributions from Prof. Asha Kumari (HOD, Geography), Dr. Priya Sharma, and Prof. Surbhi Gupta. Technical support was provided by Mohit Kalotra (MTS), ensuring the smooth execution of the event.

National Youth Day at GDC Marh served not only as a celebration of Swami Vivekananda’s enduring legacy but also as a platform to inspire and engage the next generation of leaders in the pursuit of a progressive and united India.
