Ganderbal, July 15, 2025: Ganderbal District has been conferred the prestigious National One District One Product (ODOP) Award for its exceptional efforts in promoting the traditional Willow Wicker craft, locally known as Keani Keam. The accolade, presented by the Union Minister, recognises the district’s outstanding contribution to the Prime Minister’s vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India) by showcasing the artistry and economic potential of this centuries-old craft.The Willow Wicker craft, a hallmark of Ganderbal’s cultural heritage, involves intricate weaving of willow reeds, thriving in the district’s favourable soil and climatic conditions. This recognition under the ODOP initiative highlights Ganderbal’s role in preserving and promoting this hand-skilled craft, which has been a livelihood source for countless artisans. The award celebrates the dedication of local craftsmen whose expertise in creating baskets, furniture, and decorative items has gained national acclaim.
During the award ceremony, officials emphasised the significance of the Geographical Indication (GI) registration for Willow Wicker, which will facilitate access to niche markets and enhance global visibility for Ganderbal’s artisans. The district administration, led by Deputy Commissioner Jatin Kishore, has been lauded for its proactive measures in supporting artisans through training, marketing, and infrastructure development under the ODOP framework.The National ODOP Award underscores Ganderbal’s commitment to sustainable economic growth and cultural preservation.
