From struggle to spotlight: Rajouri teen becomes J&K’s first boxer on Asian tage

Rajouri, April 11,2026- In a story of grit, determination, and rising ambition, a young boxer from Rajouri has scripted history by becoming the first athlete from the region to represent Jammu & Kashmir at a prestigious Asian-level boxing championship.

Hailing from a modest background, the teenage pugilist has battled not just opponents in the ring, but also financial constraints, limited infrastructure, and social challenges. Despite the odds, his unwavering focus and relentless training have earned him a place on the international stage, marking a proud moment for the Union Territory.

The young athlete, trained at the Khelo India Boxing Centre in Rajouri, has been selected to represent India at the upcoming U-15 Asian Boxing Championship. His journey began in a small local training setup, where basic facilities were often a challenge. However, his dedication caught the attention of coaches, who nurtured his talent and guided him toward competitive excellence.

Speaking about his achievement, the boxer expressed gratitude to his family and coaches for their constant support. “This is just the beginning. I want to bring medals for my country and make my region proud,” he said.

Officials from the sports department and local administration have lauded his achievement, calling it a milestone for sports development in the Pir Panjal region. They emphasized that such success stories highlight the growing impact of grassroots initiatives like the Khelo India programme in identifying and nurturing talent from remote areas.

The achievement has also inspired many young athletes in Rajouri and nearby districts, proving that with determination and the right support, dreams can transcend geographical and economic barriers.

As he prepares to compete against some of the best young boxers in Asia, hopes are high that the Rajouri teen will not only perform well but also pave the way for more athletes from Jammu & Kashmir to shine on international platforms.
